Kelp is a large edible seaweed of the genus Laminaria, rich in minerals and vitamins, especially B complex. It is cardiotonic and beneficial for the brain , sensory nerves and spinal cord, blood vessels, nails. It has been used successfully in mild hypothyroidism , due to its high iodine content . Thyroid enlargement (goiter) can be due to various causes, such as simple or malignant hyperplasia (cancer) or hyperthyroidism, but is often due to iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism . In the latter case, Kelp can help significantly. Kelp increases metabolism and aids in weight loss , and is considered beneficial in cases of ulcers and hair loss . It is also used against environmental poisoning from heavy metals, such as barium and cadmium, as well as to prevent the body from absorbing radioactive iodine and strontium 90, elements released during nuclear reactions. It appears to be beneficial (due to iodine) in sarcoidosis (benign tumors), erythematous dermatoses, and fibrocystic breast disease. Kelp may be particularly useful for vegetarians and those who must avoid salt , due to the increased likelihood of receiving insufficient amounts of iodine in their diet. Each tablet contains 300mg of Pacific Ocean Kelp, containing 150mcg of iodine.
